Now for some Show and Tell Part 1

These delightful finishes were on show at the May Guild meeting.

  Row 4 Basket Weave

  Cutting

  Cut from the Background Fabric    18 rectangles 3 ½” x 1 ½”

  Cut from Fabric A    36 rectangles 3 ½” x 1 1/2”

  Cut from Fabric B    18 rectangles 3 ½” x 1 1/2”

  Cut from Fabric C    36 rectangles 3 ½” x 1 1/2”

  OR

  Cut each fabric into 1 ½” strips

  Block

  Sew rectangles together into 2 sets of units. 18 units made with rectangles of

   Fabric   B, Fabric  A and  Fabric  B together in that order.

  And 18 units made with rectangles of

   Fabric C, Background  Fabric  and Fabric C together in that order.

  Pressing seams as you go.

  To make a block sew 4 units, 2 of each type, together as shown above

  Make 9 blocks 

  Trim each block to 6 ½” square

  Sew the row together

  OR

  Sew together strips of Fabric B, Fabric A and Fabric B in that order

  Then sew together strips of Fabric C, Background Fabric and Fabric C

  Pressing seams as you go.

  Cross cut the sewn strips by 3 1/2” to make units

  To make a block sew 4 units, 2 of each type, together as shown above

  Make 9 blocks 

  Trim each block to 6 ½” square

  Sew the row together.

Cut from the Background Fabric    31 squares 2 ½” x 2 ½”

Cut from Fabric A    20 squares 2  1/2” x 2 1/2”

Cut from Fabric B    12 squares 2 1/2” x 2  1/2”

Block

Sew the squares  into blocks as shown above, 4 A blocks and 3 B blocks.

Pressing seams as you go.

Trim each block to 6 ½” square.

Sew the row together alternating the blocks.

Row 2   Broken Dishes

Cut from the Background Fabric     14 squares 3 7/8 “ x  3 7/8”

Cut from Fabric  A      8 squares 3 7/8” x 3 7/8”

Cut from Fabric  B      6 squares  3 7/8” x 3 7/8”

Block

On each background square draw a line on the wrong side from corner to corner.

This will be the cutting line.

Take one background square and one Fabric  A square. Place them right sides together

Sew a ¼” seam each side of the cutting line.

Repeat with all the Fabric A squares then with all the Fabric B squares

You should now have 14 sewn squares.

Cut through each square on the cutting line, open out and press each new square.

You should now have 28 half square triangle squares.

Sew them into blocks as shown above, 4 A blocks and 3 B blocks.

Trim each block to 6 ½” square.

Sew the row together alternating the blocks.

MYSTERY BLOCK OF THE MONTH

ROW BY ROW QUILT

Over the next 6 months I will give you 1 or 2 block patterns each month.

You need to make 7 blocks and join them together to make a row.

There will be a total of 9 rows altogether.

Fabric Requirements for the Blocks

                 Light Background Fabric   1.50 m

Dark Fabric   1m

Medium fabric A   1m

Medium fabric B   50cm

This is a general guide line as you may want to use several different lights, darks and mediums or give the quilt a scrappy look.

I do recommend a high contrast between your light and dark fabrics.

ROUND ROBIN option

Get together with some friends and make the quilt as a Round Robin.

Make the first row then place it and your fabric in a cloth bag.

Put together a schedule for the group of when to swap bags with whom.

For happy group dynamics, remember to be on time and accurate.

The first block is a Double Four Patch on Point

For this row you need 4 block A’s and 3 block B’s

Cut from the background fabric 14 patches 3   7/8” x 3   7/8” then cut corner to corner for 28 triangle patches

Again from the background fabric cut 28 x 1  9/16” squares         

 Cut from the dark fabric 16 x 1  9/16” squares and 6 x 2  5/8”

And from one of the medium fabrics cut 12 x 1  9/16” squares and

8 x 2  5/8” squares

First sew together the small 4 patch units first, next sew together the bigger 4 patch units and finally sew triangles on opposite sides of the unit then on the other two sides.

Trim each block to 6 ½” square then sew them together

 Alternating between block A and block B
