The January Workshop will be held on the 19th January, 2012 10 am start - come along at 9:30 am if you can help with setting up the tables, cords, etc.

The project "Seattle Streets" is 60"x72" without borders. You won't finish this in one day, but you will have some blocks done.

Fabric Requirements:

3 metres black or whatever solid colour suits your other fabrics
16 FQs florals, batiks, Christmas, black & white (maybe use red sashing), children's novelty

* Not suitable for fussy cutting.

Class preparation:

Black fabric

Cut off the selvedge on one side.
Cut 1" strips along the length - 10 (you will need more).
If you fold your fabric to cut it, check you don't get those V shapes.

From each FQ

cut 3" x 22"
cut 4" x 22"
cut 5" x 22"

Also bring

Loaded bobbins - Machine with pedal & lead - 1/4" foot
12" square ruler or larger or 6"x 12" or larger
Rotary cutter - new blade - Bandaids
Cutting board to suit ruler. Share between 4
Iron and ironing board (mini). Share between 4.
New machine needles.
Usual sewing gear (unpicker, scissors, pins)
Power board, extension lead.
Cushion. Mug. Own lunch.

Cost: $2 door entry - This is a free pattern, but the designer would like a donation to a charity. It is suggested $3 each to Diamond Creek CFA.

Welcome to the AGM month - the meeting is always very entertaining, and it's lovely to know "first hand" who will be steering the ship in the upcoming year. Read the latest newsletter, and check out the lovely show n tell.
All visitors are always welcome, and don't forget that this Saturday is our extra sit and sew day, so if you can't get to the AGM on Thursday night, try for Saturday. It's nice to spend the day with fellow quilters.

The Retreat, August Newsletter and the Upcoming Guild Meeting

Well this has been an exciting few weeks. We've taken part in the Annual Retreat to Myrniong - just out of Bacchus Marsh, a wonderful guild meeting in July and there is going to be another great meeting coming up on Saturday. Take a look at the August newsletter and see what fun we have had.

The retreat had a party theme - and what a party we had, full of lots of sewing, laughter, great food, and wonderful friendships enjoyed. Much creativity was shown, such a talented bunch of ladies - the favourite theme would have had to have been Jackie's 1600 quilt made from a jelly roll, many were created over the weekend. The variety can be endless - such a great idea. Have a look at this YouTube video, it shows just how easy it is. Take a look at our member blogs for more images of the fun time we had at retreat.

On Saturday, 20th August, Bill Westalee will be demonstrating the wonderful adjustable rulers they designed, and having seen a presentation at the Phillip Island Retreat two years ago, I know we can all pick up some great tips and tricks to improve our piecing.

Take a well earned rest and have a read of our latest newsletter - May edition.It is once again full of wonderful insights and fabulous show n tell from the May meeting, as well as upcoming events.

I'd like to personally, and I'm sure my fellow workshop attendees will agree, give thanks to Lyn for the wonderful bag making from denim jeans.It was amazing just to see the stash of denim that Lyn owns. Lyn was a great teacher, we were all most inspired, I can see many bags in the future coming to light. My husbands hand me downs just didn't make the cut - literally, too worn - I need to steal them sooner in the future ;-). The newsletter shows our work for the day, and I'm sure future show n tell will show many final products. Thanks again Lyn.

This month, at the guild meeting, we are hosting two events - first is Library Week, bring along quilts or other sewing items inspired from books - the items along with the books will be on display during the meeting night.

With May being the month when THE BIGGEST MORNING TEA is held with the focus on Cancer, and the thursday morning ladies are having their PINK morning, the theme of our May evening meeting will be

THINK PINKI!!

So use your imagination - get out your PINK gear, and maybe bring along some PINK food to share for supper!

During our April Guild meeting - Saturday 16th, 12 participants will be taking part in a workshop with Lyn Easton. Lyn is one of our members and has kindly offered to run a workshop for us. Lyn can be seen sporting her Denim Jeans bags and several ladies have asked how they go together.

Lyn will be running this workshop from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Then at our meeting we can look forward to some lovely show and tell and some general information for the rest of us. Check the newsletter, link above, for further details.

You will need to start collecting those old denim jeans from the cupboard or the op shop and look out for groovy details that you can incorporate into the bag design. You will be told what to bring when you book in.

Come along and join us - it is a wonderful day. All visitors welcome.

Go and make yourself a lovely cup of tea and return to read the latest "March Newsletter" - jam packed full of information, lists of upcoming events, the exhibition challenge and show n tell from our February meeting.

Next Thursday, the 17th, is our Guild meeting night, from 7:30pm onwards - come along and join us.

Jenni Scott from Always Quilting is coming to inform us all about thread.
She is a great speaker and will be giving us all sorts of advice about which threads to use where. She does sell the Aurifil Threads and will have them to purchase on the night, although she will not just be talking about her own threads which is great. You can check out her website at Always Quilting.

** Don't forget, we get the extra sewing day on Saturday 19th March, from 10am onwards.

All are welcome - come and enjoy the companionship of fellow sewers - and see a wonderful array of show n tell. It always amazes me the diversity of quilting styles - all beautiful and inspirational.

The North of the Yarra Quilters Exhibition will be held on Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th October, 2011 from 10:00am - 4:00pm at the Eltham Community Centre - 801 Main Rd, Eltham, Melways Ref: 21 J6.

There will be a beautiful display of our members works including quilts, wall hangings and bags. There will also be Trader stalls and light refreshments available.

The North of the Yarra Quilters Guild is a group of people that have come together to share their enjoyment of patchwork, applique and quilting

We meet in the Senior Citizens Building in Gipson Street, Diamond Creek, a northern suburb of Melbourne. Our postal address is: PO Box 754, Eltham 3095, Victoria, Australia

Our group has casual sewing days every Thursday and a monthly Guild meeting, which often includes: mini workshops; presentations by speakers; stalls by the local patchwork shops.

Happy 18th Birthday NOTYQ - November Newsletter

Come along and help us celebrate our 18th birthday...

The next Guild Meeting is on Thursday the 18th of November. From 7:30pm we will enjoy a lovely evening of friendship and sewing. The meeting will include a lovely array of Show n Tell as people finish of projects started at this years Symposium.

Then on the Saturday following (20th November) there is an extra Sit and Sew day - come along and enjoy this opportunity to sit and watch, or assist in, the making of the Exhibition raffle quilt, it is coming along nicely.

Quilt Downunder 2010 - for Breast Cancer Network Australia

The Quilt Downunder 2010 is on again - an exhibition and charity auction of quilts to raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Network Australia.

The 2010 auction and exhibition will again be held at The International, Lilydale.

The Exhibition will run from Monday October 11 through to Saturday October 16, and culminate in a dinner auction, on Saturday evening, October 16, 2010.

Update: All 149 quilts are now available for viewing on this site (click on Quilts for auction), and online bidding is now open.

NOTYQ Guild Retreat 2010

Well, what another fantastic retreat...the organizers need to be congratulated, they put a lot of work into these weekends and it is fully appreciated by all those who attend - thank you also to the ladies who made our block keepers - it was a treat.

From Friday 6th August through to Monday 9th August, around 75 ladies descended on Myrniong for our annual guild retreat. The room was buzzing with greetings and sewing machines already busy right from the start.

A wonderful few days of sewing, eating and chatting. Catching up with friends and being able to leisurely enjoy each others company. Not to mention the sewing of quilts, wall hangings, toys and even knitting.

It is fascinating to walk the room and see the range of quilts being made. Quilting has such a wide theme base - traditional, like the double wedding ring being made here by Christine - have a look at her achievements on her blog, to the latest crazes.

The energy and talents of these ladies is amazing. The show n tell on Sunday was awe inspiring just to see how much work was achieved. We even did our bit for the Victorian economy - around $6,500 was spent on the way there.

Thank you again for another fantastic retreat - only another 52 weeks until next year - where do I sign up.

I'd like you to see a quilt made by one of our members and someone who has been blogging for quite a while. It is a quilt made by the lovely Claire of Matching Pegs and quilted by Anita Ellis of Hillside Quilting.

We were very fortunate at the last Guild Meeting to have Anita present a very interesting talk to our members on preparing our quilts when we take the opportunity to have a professional quilter - quilt our heirlooms. Anita has replicated this discussion on her blog.

I have also had Anita do a special quilt for me - which was a gift for my Mum - I was very pleased with the result, and I'd like to show it here.

I've just spent a lovely hour browsing the quilt blogging world and came across this lovely tip for creating Flying Geese with minimal fabric wastage and wanted to share it with you all.

Guild Meeting Thursday 15th July 2010

Our next guild meeting will be on Thursday 15th July at 7:30pm.

Come along and receive some advice from our own Anita Ellis, from Hillside Quilting, on preparing our quilts for a machine quilter. Do you know how much extra backing is required? Do you know that the quilter can attach the binding? These questions, and Anita's journey, will be the topic of the evening.

Come also and see the lovely Show n Tell made during the previous month and sit and sew with like minded quilters.

Then on the following Saturday, 17th, there is an additional sewing day from 10am. All are welcome.

January Thursday 21st - Sewing Day "Aunt Sukey's Choice"

On Thursday January 21st 2010 Darelle and Helen chose to do the block Aunt Sukey's Choice.

It is a block that came out of the 1930's, but that does not mean you should be restricted to fabrics of that era. Think about scrappy, batiks, brights, Amish or reproduction styles. Arrangement of the block is also up to you.

A search on the Internet can give you many ideas. Here is a link to Google Images for some ideas.

Helen has made up some sample blocks if anyone is interested to have a look.
So members turned up on the 21st with their sewing machine and fabrics and a good time was had by all. BYO lunch. Patterns are available from Helen. Photos of quilts made will be posted here soon.

Pattern idea for baby quilts

Anita Grossman Solomon, from New York, devised this rotary-cut quilt for an appearance on Simply Quilts (episode #1129). Each fabric in Super-Sized Nine Patch is cut with just 2 cuts with a rotary cutter. Using 3 fabrics and swapping the cut pieces yields 3 baby quilts in no time at all.

I can see these quilts used for charity quilts, last minute baby showers or background for applique.

Donated quilt for Bushfires Victoria, Australia

To members of NOTY Quilting Group; my heartfelt Thanks to all of you involved in the making, co-ordination and distribution of quilts for bush-fire victims.

As a recipient of one of these beautiful quilts, I want to express how much my family and I appreciate the generosity of spirit, the kindness and compassion that is in every single stitch.

Having lost everything in the Black Saturday fires with nothing left to show after 52 years in Marysville, the quilt will become a keepsake and heirloom to pass down to the family.

I Thank again all those involved and truly appreciate the work and sentiments involved.

This was one of 117 quilts that the Guild received from Quilters in New Zealand for those who suffered during the bushfires here in Victoria earlier this year. Guild Meeting Thursday 19th November 2009

Come along and help us celebrate our 17th Birthday - yes 17 years old this year.
During the evening our guest speaker will be Mariya Waters. We are looking forward to meeting this Austalian award winning quilter. Mariya currently specialises in hand appliqué and machine quilting but has also won international awards for contemporary art and innovative quilts.

Mariya began quilting in New Zealand in 1990 and her first quilt was selected for a juried quilt show and then published in a book. In 1994 while living in England her third quilt won the prestigious Ascot Trophy at the national championships.

Since then Mariya has specialised in making quilts for exhibition with most taking a year or more to complete. Have a look at her website.
Come along and enjoy the birthday atnosphere and friendship of fellow quilters - there is sure to be a beautiful array of Show n Tell as well.

Worlds Biggest Hexagon Quilt

The Worlds Biggest Hexagon Quilt is underway here in Queensland, Australia.
"About 6 months ago Gail Chalker of Gatton, Queensland, Australia decided to see if she could organise an attempt to make the World's Biggest Hexagon Quilt. Gail is a partner in a Quilt Shop the small country town of Gatton, which is about 1 hour and 15 minutes west of Brisbane, Queensland's capital city. Using her network of friends, students and customers and her links to several yahoo quilt groups, Gail started to spread the word about her interest in attempting to set a world record for Hexagon Quilts. She researched the Guinness Book of Records requirements and decided that this was something which was worth trying to achieve."

Leah has included an image of each design and a video demonstrating how it is achieved. She has also included where her Inspiration came from for the design, the Filler Design Type, Difficulty Level, Directional Texture and Suggestions for Use - it is a fantastic resource.

North of the Yarra Quilters Guild Exhibition 2009

The North of the Yarra Quilters Exhibition was held on Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th October, 2009 from 10:00am - 4:00pm at the Eltham Community Centre - 801 Main Rd, Eltham, Melways Ref: 21 J6.

There was a beautiful display of our members works including quilts, wall hangings and bags. There were also Trader stalls and light refreshments available.
Entry fee was $7 with children under 14 admitted free.

A raffle was run with the prize being either the choice of a Bernina Activa 210 Sewing Machine RRP $1299 (Donated by Kate’s Sewing Centre, Bundoora) OR A Tribute to Mrs Williams Quilt, Designed by Corliss of Threadbear, Castlemaine, Quilted by Leanne Kaufmann. Raffle tickets were available for sale through members of NOTYQ or at the Exhibition.

Bobbin Wraps

The first of I hope many hints and tips that I come across on the Internet. This is a link to an article giving a great idea for keeping your bobbin threads under control when not in use. These easy made wraps tuck easily around any size bobbins to stop the thread unwinding.

Basically...

"In the plumbing department, there are many types of flexible tubing, pick up some 5/8" OD x 1/2" ID clear vinyl tubing.

If you try this yourself, make sure the tubing you get is fairly sturdy, but easy enough to cut with a pair of scissors. You don't want the tubing to be so thick that you can't unroll it, but you don't want it to be so thin that it won't stay wrapped around the bobbin.

By cutting off lengths of this tube approximately 3/8" long and cutting a slit down the side, I created a little plastic sleeve for each of my bobbins. These fit very snugly around the bobbin, and keep the thread tails from coming loose. I cut my bobbin sleeves so that they fit underneath both flanges of the bobbin. They don't have to be perfect; as long as they are short enough to tuck inside the bobbin, your sleeves will stay put."

There will be Quilts, Fabrics and Patchwork Supplies from Threadbear of Castlemaine, for sale.
Morning and Afternoon Tea, Sandwiches, Sausage Sizzle and Drinks available.

A Quilt is also being raffled.

Cost is $5.00 per entry - All funds raised from admission, food stall and quilt raffle will be donated to Breast Cancer Research

What a wonderful day we had full of show n tell by our members and our guest speaker - Kellie from "Don't Look Now" .

Kellie gave a very intersting talk on her quilting journey to where she is now.

She has a beautiful range of patterns, check out her blog and see these beautiful bright projects, there are some freebies there to wet your appetite. It was lovely to see some of the quilts she has made on the day, her work is gorgeous.
Kellie uses a fusible raw edge appliqué technique which was fascinating to hear about.

The day ended around 4pm after our raffle and door prizes were given away.

Another fabulous retreat, so thankyou to the organising committee for putting on such a wonderful weekend. Judging by the show n tell, it was a very industrious group that descended on Lake Burnbrae, Myrniong from Friday 7th August through to Monday 10th.

Though I see/hear there was some fun along the way as well - a bit of excercise to loosen those sewing muscles...

What a great, and talented, group of girls...
